Your Audi car or SUV's disc brake system is comprised of many parts, but three are among the most essential. The brake calipers are one of those three. They're basically clamps with one - or more - pistons, and they can be located both at the front and rear of your vehicle.

What Brake Calipers Do

Essentially, they fasten to your brake rotors. How they do that is a bit more involved. You start the process by stepping on the brake pedal. The master brake cylinder sends brake fluid to the pistons in the calipers. The pressure in the pistons build and the calipers get charged. That forces the calipers to close down on the rotors, with brake pads cushioning contact and helping to generate the friction that slows your vehicle.

Braking produces a lot of heat, however. If your rotors don't disperse it well enough, the calipers can be affected. Seals can decay due to the heat, which lets contaminants accumulate and cause problems. Signs of failing brake calipers include:

• Leaking brake fluid
• You hear grinding or squealing noises when you're braking
• Dash warning lights come on
• Low brake pedal pressure
• Pulling sideways as you brake
